Apart from his hundreds of church cantatas, Johann Sebastian Bach wrote secular cantatas in Weimar, Köthen and Leipzig, for instance for members of the Royal-Polish and Prince-electoral Saxonian family (. Trauer-Ode), or other public or private occasions (. The text of these cantatas was occasionally in dialect (. Peasant Cantata) or in Italian (.

The Bach Collegium Japan was founded by Masaaki Suzuki 20 years ago, in 1990, and the team's cycle of Bach's Cantatas was launched five years later, in November 1995. Bach – Cantatas Volume 47. Composers. Bach, Johann Sebastian.

The magisterial cycle of Bach cantatas by Japanese conductor Masaaki Suzuki is winding its way to its end with the release of several albums of the composer's rarely heard secular cantatas; the present album is the third of these. Those picking and choosing from among the series might decide among the selections by sampling the soprano arias; this release, like the second volume, features Joanne Lunn, who cultivates a spare, boy soprano-like sound, while the comparatively creamier Carolyn Sampson appears on the first release. Most of the music is a lighter shade of Bach, with the two wedding pieces and the cantata Schwingt freudig euch empor, BWV 36c (Soar joyfully upwards), indulging in some jocular word-painting and moods of the sort the composer rarely indulged in otherwise. This work was a congratulatory serenade for an unknown teacher.

The third volume in Bach Collegium Japan’s series of Bach's secular cantatas features two works composed for weddings, yet completely different in character. Of particular interest is the unceremonious Quodlibet (Latin for "what pleases"), probably intended for a private function in Bach’s life. All that exists is a fragment of the piece, in Bach’s own hand: the beginning and ending, including the title page, are missing.
