Whitney - Light Upon The Lake mp3 album
Light Upon the Lake is the moseying debut album of Whitney, a septet built around the core songwriting team of Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, both formerly of Smith Westerns. Often surprisingly intimate for a seven-piece, the group makes subtle use of instrumentation like brass and strings to flesh out without symphonizing their country-tinged indie pop. The melancholy opener, "No Woman," begins with cushiony keyboards and a short brass fanfare before Ehrlich - who doubles as the band's lead singer and drummer - introduces his misty, double-tracked falsetto.
Light Upon the Lake, the debut from Whitney, was born from early-morning songwriting sessions during one of the most brutal winters in Chicago’s history. Vocalist/drummer Julien Ehrlich and guitarist Max Kakacek began writing unflinching, honest songs about everything from break-ups to the passing of Ehrlich’s grandfather. The pair leaned on one another for both honest critique and a sounding board for working through their newly-discovered truths. Most notably, the record includes a d track, You and Me. Written and performed back in 2014/15, it’s a fresh, unexpected glance into Whitney’s past creative headspace.
Album · 2016 · 10 Songs. Taking pages from Byrds ballads ( Light Upon the Lake ), pre-psychedelic Beatles ( Golden Days ), and the more placid side of soul ( Dave’s Song ), the duo-comprising former members of Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra-sound cheerful but bittersweet, muted by a sense of melancholy that gives drummer/vocalist Julien Ehrlich’s falsetto a sneaky, surprising. Even the album’s most upbeat moment, The Falls, feels less like it’s looking forward to something, and more like it’s looking back.
On June 3, 2016 the album Light Upon the Lake was released In 2017, the band announced a new demos album with a previously unreleased song, "You and Me. .In March 2017 Whitney released two new songs, "You've Got a Woman" and "Gonna Hurry (As Slow as I Can)" In an interview published in April 2019 the band mentioned their second album, due in 2019, will deal with "fear, confusion, and substance abuse".
When Whitney released No Woman -the first of two singles off of their debut album Light Upon the Lake -it seemed too good to be their first release. The track was just the right meld of expertly noodly guitar leads, faint falsettos, lullaby piano and bombastic horns. In reality, it’s not truly the band’s first effort. Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich, Whitney’s songwriting duo, have been preparing to release this debut album since shortly after their last band, the Smith Westerns, split in 2014
