Underground is a 1968 album by American jazz musician Thelonious Monk. It features Monk on piano, Larry Gales on bass, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, and Ben Riley on drums. The album is widely known for its provocative cover image, which depicts Monk as a fictitious French Resistance fighter in the Second World War. It contains a number of new Monk compositions, some of which appear in recorded form only on this album.

His compositional style, much like his odd, fractured and angular piano playing, was deceptively simple and repetitive, full of endlessly circular progressions that seemed to almost intersect themselves at whim, ending up more like auditory puzzle boxes than anything resembling a jazz standard.

Misterioso (Thelonious Monk album). Template:Distinguish2. Misterioso is a 1958 live album by American jazz ensemble the Thelonious Monk Quartet. The title of Misterioso referred to Monk's reputation as an enigmatic, challenging musician. The record features four of his earlier compositions, which Monk reworked live

Thelonious Monk is one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time and one of first creators of modern jazz and bebop. For much of his career, Monk played with small groups at Milton's Playhouse. Many of his compositions have become jazz standards, including "Well, You Needn't," "Blue Monk" and "Round Midnight. Not content to pander ineffectively to a nonexistent audience, Monk turned a page with his 1956 album, Brilliant Corners, which is usually considered to be his first true masterpiece. With the release of two more Riverside masterworks, Thelonious Himself and Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane, Monk finally received the acclaim he deserved.

Thelonious Monk was a pivotal figure in the history of jazz, using dissonance as an asset rather than a mistake. His compositions and playing style are uniquely his and his alone. Genius Of Modern Music Volume One + Two. AM: I may contradict this point a bit in covering the next album on this list, but, honestly, there are few better ways to get into Monk’s work than these two volumes of Genius Of Modern Music. As Ryan points out, it’s straight-up craziness that these are the first recordings of Monk, given that they’re essentially all his greatest hits.

Monk was an unconventional stage presence, known for getting up from his piano to dance (sometimes in a counter-clockwise motion which drew comparisons to ring-shout and Muslim Sufi whirling) while his band members were still playing. Monk is one of only five jazz musicians to date to be featured on the cover of Time magazine, which puts him in a select company with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis, and Dave Brubeck.
