Theatre of the Absurd, dramatic works of certain European and American dramatists of the 1950s and early ’60s who agreed with the Existentialist philosopher Albert Camus’s assessment, in his essay The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), that the human situation is essentially absurd, devoid of purpose. The term is also loosely applied to those dramatists and the production of those works. Originally shocking in its flouting of theatrical convention while popular for its apt expression of the preoccupations of the mid-20th century, the Theatre of the Absurd declined somewhat by the mid-1960s; some of its innovations had been absorbed into the mainstream of theatre even while serving to inspire further experiments. Some of the chief authors of the Absurd have sought new directions in their art, while others continue to work in the same vein.

Shelves: theatre-studies, theatre. Cheat code to reading The Theatre of the Absurd: read the chapter 'The Significance of the Absurd' before reading the rest of the book. This book is a timeless analysis of one of the major movements in modern theatre history, a must read for any theatre practitioner who are intent in seriously questioning their own craft and philosophy. It doesn't take a very close read to see that these playwrights don't necessarily belong together, either.

The Theatre of the Absurd (French: théâtre de l'absurde ) is a post–World War II designation for particular plays of absurdist fiction written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1950s, as well as one for the style of theatre which has evolved from their work. The Theatre of the Absurd attacks the comfortable certainties of religious or political orthodoxy. It aims to shock its audience out of complacency, to bring it face to face with the harsh facts of the human situation as these writers see it. But the challenge behind this message is anything but one of despair. It is a challenge to accept the human condition as it is, in all its mystery and absurdity, and to bear it with dignity, nobly, responsibly; precisely because there are no easy solutions to the mysteries of existence, because ultimately man is alone in a meaningless world.

Musique is the fourth studio album by the Norwegian metal band Theatre of Tragedy, released in 2000. The title on the album's cover,, is the pronunciation of the English word "music" transcribed in the International Phonetic Alphabet. Musique is the album that marked for the band the change from gothic metal with Early Modern English lyrics to a more electronic style, using Modern English.

The Theatre of the Absurd is a term for a distinct style of drama written largely by European playwrights in the 1940s–1960s, though it has become something of a tradition that lives on. On the whole, the Theatre of the Absurd rebelled against theatrical traditions and expressed a confusing, seemingly meaningless world where people encounter bizarre or absurd circumstances. It changed the way comedy was expressed in the theatrical tradition, often combining broad comedy with horrific situations to produce tragicomedy in the line of, say, Shakespeare, the Marx Brothers, and Charlie Chaplin

The Theatre of the Absurd.

The Absurd Theatre can be seen as an attempt to restore the importance of myth and ritual to our age, by making man aware of the ultimate realities of his condition, by instilling in him again the lost sense of cosmic wonder and primeval anguish. The Absurd Theatre hopes to achieve this by shocking man out of an existence that has become trite, mechanical and complacent. It is felt that there is mystical experience in confronting the limits of human condition. Words failed to express the essence of human experience, not being able to penetrate beyond its surface.
