Blue-ringed octopuses, comprising the genus Hapalochlaena, are four highly venomous species of octopus that are found in tide pools and coral reefs in the Pacific and Indian oceans, from Japan to Australia. They can be identified by their yellowish skin and characteristic blue and black rings that change color dramatically when the animal is threatened. They eat small animals, including crabs, hermit crabs, shrimp, and other crustaceans.

The greater blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena lunulata) is one of four species of highly venomous blue-ringed octopuses belonging to the family Octopodidae.

The Blue-ringed octopus, Hapalochlaena maculosa, can be found only in the temperate waters of southern Australia, from southern Western Australia to eastern Victoria at depths ranging from 0-50 m. Hapalochlaena lunulata can be found in shallow reefs and tide pools from northern Australia to Japan, including Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Philippines, and Indonesia and as far west as Sri Lanka. at depths ranging from 0-20 m. The species is named for the bright blue rings it bears, but while resting it is a pale brown to light yellow color, depending on surroundings.

Blue-Ringed Octopus Eyes. They are distributed across the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, from Japan to Australia. Blue-ringed Octopi are immune to their own The venoms of other pygmy octopi are also not potent to these creatures. Other than the lethal weapon of their inbuilt poison, the octopus can camouflage itself with its surroundings as an effective defense mechanism. Their physical flexibility is also a big adaptation of these creatures. The criss-cross patterns of fibers that have built up their muscles enable them to squeeze through extremely small spaces, rock cracks, etc. Blue-Ringed Octopus Bite.

The name ‘blue-ringed octopus' does not actually refer to a single species, but rather a genus of species, all with the circular, iridescent blue markings for which they are named. The brain of an octopus is shaped like a donut, and is centred around their oesophagus. They have two very well-developed eyes that are similar to those possessed by vertebrates. Octopuses have three hearts, with a central heart and one over each gill. These gills in turn are suspended in a cavity under the body.

Blue ringed octopus display dark brown ochre bands in its undisturbed posture. These dark brown bands run all over its arms and body with blue rings superimposed on these bands. However when disturbed, the blue ringed octopus exhibits electric blue color which can be observed when they’re taken out of water. One should never pick these octopuses and it’d be rather better to leave it to the professionals. The blue ringed octopus will only bite when provoked or handled incorrectly

Returning to Gentle Giant's fourth album after any kind of lengthy absence, it's astonishing just how little Octopus has dated. Octopus, however, marries the two seamlessly, with the cover speaking for itself, of course
