The Gene Rodgers Trio - Jazz Comes To The Astor mp3 album

In the late 1950s, certain styles of jazz were finally considered acceptable to be heard at prestigious supper clubs. Rodgers, in a 1958 trio with bassist Tommy Williams and drummer Ben Riley, performs seven standards and two of his originals live at the Astor. He plays fine straight-ahead piano and shows that he had kept his ears open to such players as Art Tatum, Bud Powell and Ahmad Jamal. Although the album is a bit brief (under 35 minutes), the quality is high throughout the fine date.
