Bach: English Suites; Partitas. Bach: English Suites; Partitas. CD - Virgin Classics. The English Suites (no one is quite sure why they are so called, but there's nothing particularly English about them) and Partitas are sets of mostly short, dance-inspired movements invested by Bach with dizzying, coruscating contrapuntal complexity. Leonhardt's approach is sometimes described as severe, and there are keyboard players who find more gemütlichkeit in Bach's music. But the harpsichord is probably the instrument of choice with these suites, and the tense muscularity of Leonhardt's playing makes for a very satisfyingly exciting ride in the faster movements.

6-1. Bach: English Suites Nos. 1, 3 & 6 (Vol. 1). English Suites No. 1 BWV 806, No. 3 BWV 808, No. 6 BWV 811. Murray Perahia (Piano). Gustav Leonhardt on EMI 49000 (1985). Peter Watchorn on Titanic 254 (1999). Murray Perahia on Sony 60276 & 60277 (1998). Leonhardt and Watchorn also deliver the essence, but at this point I need to make a big deal out of repeats. The only time I downgrade a performance not having repeats is when I do not have a feeling of completeness from the interpretation. That's the situation with Leonhardt.
The English Suites, BWV 806–811, are a set of six suites written by the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach for harpsichord (or clavichord) and generally thought to be the earliest of his 19 suites for keyboard, the others being the six French Suites, BWV 812–817, the six Partitas, BWV 825-830 and the Overture in the French style, BWV 831. These six suites for keyboard are thought to be the earliest set that Bach composed aside from several miscellaneous suites written when he was much younger.
No one is exactly sure how Bach's English Suites got their name. We do know that it did not originate with the composer. There was a story circulating shortly after Bach's death that the music was commissioned by a wealthy Englishman, but there is no proof. The music is formally identical to the French Suites, in fact, although the pieces in English Suites are larger and more fully developed, and each suite begins with a large overture or prelude. Gustav Leonhardt has recorded this music more than once, but these performances are widely acknowledged to be among his very greatest Bach recordings. They have been transferred to CD in excellent sound, and at budget price, too. - -David Hurwitz.
