Kudsi Erguner - The Turkish Ney mp3 album

The classical Turkish ney's closest relatives in other countries, the Arab nay and the Persian ney, do not use a mouthpiece, but rather blow against the sharpened edge of the tube. In Turkish folk music, one type of ney (dilli)(Tin whistle) has a fipple; the other type (dilsiz) is a rim-blown oblique flute, as is the Turkish classical ney. The Bulgarian kaval, a folk instrument, resembles the Turkish dilsiz folk ney. The Romanian nai-a panpipe, not a flute- may be related etymologically and morphologically.

Kudsi Ergüner (born 4 February 1952 in Diyarbakır, Turkey) is a Turkish musician. He is considered a master of traditional Mevlevi Sufi music and is one of the best-known players of the Turkish ney flute. As a boy, Erguner studied with his father Ulvi Erguner and attended the Sema of the Mevlevi-Sufi tradition along with other Dervish ceremonies. He started his musical career in Istanbul Radio in 1969.

The ney, Persian for reed, plays a leading role in the music of the Arab, Persian, and Turkish worlds. Although simple in design, this reed flute can achieve a range of three octaves. These recordings by Kudsi Erguner, a master of traditional Mevlevi Sufi music, demonstrate the makam melodic scale system and the taksim, virtuosic improvisations of this classical music style. Erguner is a prolific artist who also founded a school in Paris where he teaches Sufi tradition and music. This album is part of the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music.
