Dean Dillon, who became a regular scribe for Strait and other country artists, was mulling over the song idea at Nashville's Third Coast bar when veteran songwriter Frank Dycus walked through the door.

The song was written by Frank Dycus with Dean Dillon, who would go on to write numerous further hits for Strait and became a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. Dillon was a hit artist in his own right, placing 20 singles on the country chart between 1979 and 1993  . Although it never made the top 20 of the country album chart, Strait Country would rack up an aggregate of 57 weeks on the bestsellers. It went gold in 1988 and platinum in 1999. He is known for his neotraditionalist country style, cowboy look, and being one of the first and main country artists to bring country music back to its roots and away from the pop country era in the 1980s. Strait’s success began when his first single "Unwound" was a hit in 1981  . His highest certified album is Strait Out of the Box (1995), which sold 2 million copies (8 Platinum due to being a box set with four CDs). According to the RIAA, Strait is the 12th best-selling album recording artist in the United States overall.
