Their conductor is Lehar operetta specialist Adolphe Sibert (1899-1991), born Adolf Sieberth in Vienna and a student of both Clemens Krauss and Wilhelm Furtwängler. Sibert was roughly contemporary with Robert Stolz and Manuel Rosenthal, and all three lived on into their tenth decade of musical life, sustained by the rich Viennese and Parisian operetta traditions.

Personal offers for this show. Underpinning a whirlwind plot never far removed from dance, Franz Lehár’s score, in true Viennese tradition, displays a degree of orchestral and melodic refinement rarely attained in operetta. Waltzes, mazurkas and polkas set the pace in a production that, transposed to the 1920s, celebrates the splendours of a bygone world whilst raising the curtain on its fragility.
