Works, Volume II was a single album which seemingly was a compilation of leftover tracks from other album sessions that had not made those albums. While many derided the album for its apparent lack of focus, others felt it showed a different side of the band, with blues, bluegrass and jazz being very prominent as musical genres in this recording. Then and Now is a live album, that brings together two separate periods of the band's career and places them back to back. First is the legendary California Jam performance ("the Then"), which took place at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California on 6 April 1974. Second a collection of recordings from the 1997 to 1998 reunion tour ("the Now").

Says Keith Emerson, "the concert for me remains one of the highlights of my musical life. With Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on bass and vocals and Carl Palmer on drums, ELP broadened the audience for progressive rock. The band released a series of landmark albums in the 1970s, and several more in the '90s after a 14-year hiatus. The sad reality is, after the monumental production and costs of putting on that tour with the Orchestra that technical issues caused it to be less than what they hoped for. The playing is great and I wonder why they made everyone wait so long for the release of this momentous concert. I was lucky to see this tour in Madison Square Garden In New York City and it will always be a fantastic memory.
