It Takes a Thief is the debut studio album by American rapper Coolio. It was released on July 19, 1994 on Warner Bros. The album received praise for bringing a humorous and lighthearted perspective to often violent and profane themes of typical Gangsta rap. "Fantastic Voyage", a hit from the early 1980s, returned to the charts after Coolio released a song of the same name from this album.

In 1977 Ackerman cut another album, It Takes a Year. His records were being played on radio stations, and more importantly, people were asking stations about the music. By 1978 Ackerman was getting airplay in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Colorado. By their fourth year it became clear to Ackerman and Robinson that they would have to quit their jobs and concentrate on the new record label. Winston has since recorded Autumn, one of Windham Hill’s most successful albums.
Last year, I had a bout of the most horrendously painful attacks of arthritis that I've ever experienced. I went to several doctors, who only prescribed narcotics and that left me still in pain but numbed and loopy as all get out. I didn't care about anything (i. eating, playing w/ my cats, or any of my normal activities). I did loose weight, but not the way that I would have preferred. Dr. Ackerman injected me with a shot, and I have been free of those awful pain meds. I still have some pain but it's manageable.

He did just about everything from picking cover art to producing the records. Early albums featured himself It Takes a Year (1977) and his cousin, fellow guitarist Alex de Grassi Turning: Turning Back (1978). Although in later years critics would single out Ackerman's records (especially Childhood and Memory) and De Grassi's first record, the album that gained Windham Hill Records notice was the 1980 recording by George Winston Autumn.
