The Max Roach Trio Featuring The Legendary Hasaan - The Max Roach Trio Featuring The Legendary Hasaan mp3 album

Pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali only made one recording in his life, this trio set with drummer Max Roach and bassist Art Davis. A very advanced player whose style fell somewhere between Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor (with hints of Herbie Nichols), Hasaan actually had a rather original sound. His performances on his seven originals here are intense, somewhat virtuosic and rhythmic, yet often melodic in a quirky way. This is a classic of its kind, and it's a tragedy that Hasaan would not record again and would soon sink back into obscurity.

Hasaan Ibn Ali (born William Henry Langford, J. May 6, 1931 – 1980) was an American jazz pianist and composer. Several recordings of his playing may exist, but only one – The Max Roach Trio Featuring the Legendary Hasaan – has been released. Ibn Ali built a reputation in Philadelphia, where he influenced musicians including John Coltrane, but he remained little known elsewhere.

The Max Roach Trio Featuring the Legendary Hasaan. The Max Roach Trio Featuring the Legendary Hasaan is an album by American jazz drummer Max Roach, featuring pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali, recorded in 1964 and released on the Atlantic label. The album represents the sole recording of Hasaan Ibn Ali that was ever released.

Featuring the Legendary Hasaan (Hasaan Ibn Ali) is from 1965, and is the only recording ever made by this sadly neglected pianist. Drums Unlimited followed in 1966 with a stellar lineup of James Spaulding on alto sax, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ronnie Mathews on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. Both are essential recordings under the leadership of this influential drummer, reissued together at a budget price from the Collectables label.
