Herbert von Karajan recorded Ludwig van Beethoven's complete symphonies four times, first in the 1950s with the Philharmonia Orchestra on EMI, then on three more occasions with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan's 1963 cycle with Berlin is highly regarded by fans for its consistent interpretations and energetic and emotional playing. Collectors usually rate this set higher than the 1977 and 1985 recordings, also with Berlin on DG, which have been criticized for being somewhat more mechanical in performance and clinical in sound quality. Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93. 5.

Notes

"An E.M.I. recording, released in Australia exclusively by World Record Club."

Australian WRC 3rd pressing on green 'strobe' label, sourced from original stampers and featuring unique sleeve art. Only reissued in stereo, with a slightly different number on the sleeve (S/4275 and S/4276, instead of S/T 4275 & S/T4276) and label (S-4275 & S/4276, instead of ST-4275 & ST-4276) compared with the first pressing. New address combination on the back for 3rd pressing. Issued on reel-to-reel at the same time. Isued again in October 1970, possibly with a different address combination (no Brisbane address, presumably).
