As Beach Boys fans gear up for an orchestral reimagining of their music, band members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston recall the stories behind their biggest hits. Love: We originally recorded Help Me, Rhonda , and we felt it was good but thought maybe it could even be a little better. So we went back in and did some additional background parts and so on. The single version was a little more peppy, and it went to number one. I wrote the words and Brian and I worked on the music. Al did a great job singing that one. Jardine: Help Me Rhonda was something that evolved.

Help Me, Rhonda" was a track from that album in which Beach Boy Al Jardine, taking a rare lead vocal, pleaded with the title character to assist him on the rebound from another girl. The result was a smash. the Beach Boys recorded "Help Me, Rhonda" a third time for their 1973 album The Beach Boys in Concert, and Johnny Rivers revived it for a Top 40 hit in 1975 with Brian Wilson on backup vocals.

The 1965 album The Beach Boys Today! is an early stab at a cohesive pop-album statement. It deals with romantic desolation as much as teenage thrills, and its instrumentation is thicker and more expansive than what the group was already doing. This was the beta version of the new Beach Boys. Help Me, Rhonda is the first Beach Boys song where Al Jardine sang lead, and his voice - just slightly less buttery and more strained than those of his bandmates - is better-suited for a song like this. The group’s harmonies are, of course, utterly dazzling.
