Title The 1961 Summer Sessions. Supplier American Jazz Classics. This release presents all three albums recorded by the great Grant Green in the productive summer of 1961, as well as all other tunes taped during those sessions but not included on the original LPs. The albums consist of the formidable quartet set "Sunday Morning" (Blue Note BST-84099), "Grantstand" (Blue Note BST-84086) –another quartet, but this time with Yusef Lateef on tenor sax and Jack McDuff on organ –, and "Remembering" (Blue Note Jap-GXF-3071), a wonderful trio session. PERSONNEL: GRANT GREEN, guitar, on all tracks, plus: CD1 : SUNDAY MORNING KENNY.

First Session is an album by American jazz guitarist Grant Green featuring performances by Green recorded in 1960 and 1961 but not released on the Blue Note label until 2001. The album features the first recordings made by Green for Blue Note which were held back from release in favour of a later recording date which appeared as Grant's First Stand. Also included on the album are two takes from a later 1961 session. First Session is a lively portrait of a jazz great, surrounded by the best musicians in the business, getting his feet wet. Don't miss i. All compositions by Grant Green except where noted.

The results of this session were released as Green's 35-minute album "Street of Dreams". Compared to other recordings by the Young-Green-Jones trio, "Street of Dreams" presents a rather mellow, dreamy atmosphere. There are only four selections, all standards and all around eight to ten minutes long. The musicians approach the tunes as extended mood pieces, creating a marvelously light, cool atmosphere. You've all heard Elvin, Larry Young, and Grant Green get together on sessions with either Hank Mobley, Bobby Hutcherson, or Sam Rivers. But this date just gives em all a chance to stretch out and show what theys can do as a little bitty trio. Phew! check out the first track, Talkin' About JC written of course for John Coltrane, by Larry Young.

Though Grant’s First Stand was guitarist Grant Green’s maiden release for Blue Note Records it wasn’t his debut recording session for the famous New York jazz label. The St Louis guitarist had, in fact, gone into Rudy Van Gelder’s legendary studio at Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey – where Blue Note did the majority of their recordings from 1959 onwards – on two previous occasions. For some reason, however, the music recorded on two days across October and November 1960 was shelved  . The tempo drops several more notches for the slow ballad ‘A Wee Bit O’ Green’, which closes the album with a sleepy, late-night blues feel. The three-way sense of musical simpatico established by Green, Willette and Dixon is simply sublime.
