Jackson Browne long displayed an aversion to hits collections, releasing his first one 25 years after his debut album. That 1997 disc, entitled Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne, had many hits, yet it was also missing many essential songs, leaving an opening for a collection that had all of Browne's hits and signature songs in one place. Released seven years later, Rhino/Elektra's double-disc The Very Best of Jackson Browne is more or less that collection. Nevertheless, this is not a major problem since the collection does contain the great majority of Browne's best and best-known material in an attractive, engaging fashion (although the cardboard packaging may be a bit too flimsy to weather heavy, repeated listening), and for listeners who want a comprehensive overview without purchasing individual albums, this suits the bill nicely.
Jackson Browne on stage at a political rally. Background information. Breaking the usual conventions for a live album, he used all new material and combined live concert performances with recordings made on buses, in hotel rooms, and backstage, creating the audio equivalent of a road movie. The title track, "Running on Empty," chronicling the life of the 60s generation, became a major hit. Other songs from the album included "The Road" (written and recorded in 1972 by Danny O'Keefe), "Rosie," and "The Load-Out/Stay," Browne's affectionate and knowing send-off to his concert audiences and roadies. Learn how to play Jackson Browne – These Days (live solo version) note-for-note on guitar. Difficulty level: Intermediate. I saw Jackson Browne open for Laura Nyro at the Fillmore East approximately 1970. He was just a skinny kid with a guitar, no band. Dont remember if he did These Days. The first time I remember hearing it was on an album by Tom Rush which also had some unreleased James Taylor and Joni Mitchell songs.
